New York City Temporarily Renames Gay Street In Honor Of WorldPride 2019

In honor of WorldPride 2019, New York City has renamed their iconic Gay Street in Greenwich Village to be more inclusive of the LGBTQ community. You can call it Acceptance Street until the end of the month.

For the next two weeks, Gay Street will have some new colorful labels underneath its usual signage. As per an unveiling on Monday (June 17), the new labels featured under the sign include Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Nonbinary, Pansexual, Two Spirit, + Street. The new installation was championed by the New York City Commissions on Human Rights group and Mastercard. In addition to the reveal, the credit card company announced that it will soon allow transgender people to use their chosen names on credit and debut cards in an effort to push back on discrimination during cash register transactions. According to a 2015 study, 32 percent of transgender people who had to show their ID with a name or gender that did not match their physical presentation experienced harassment, were denied services or were attacked. "When we were alerted to this, we realized we could do something about it," Raj Seshadri, president of U.S. issuers for Mastercard, said in a statement.
